These scrumptious Apple Dumplings are fresh slices of apple rolled in pastry dough and baked in butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. The end result is mouthwatering buttery sweet dumplings drizzled with a caramel sauce. Good luck resisting these delicious tasty treats. They are made easily using ready-made crescent rolls and a little more than a handful of common pantry ingredients.
It is almost apple-picking season, and we just love everything about apples. This recipe, Crock Pot Apple Butter, Applesauce Cake, and Apple Cobbler are just a few of our favorites. You are going to love the ease and ten-minute prep time of this delicious dessert. Caution though! If I make these for the family, then I have to send the rest home with my daughter’s boyfriend, or we will eat the whole pan.
How to make Apple Dumplings
Start by peeling, coring, and slicing your apples into eighths. Then simply roll each apple wedge in a crescent roll starting at the wider end of the triangle. Place them in a single layer in a large baking dish as you roll them.
Meanwhile, melt the butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Next, whisk in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Cook for just a couple of minutes, whisking several times. Now remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla, being very careful as it will bubble up. Pour this mixture over and around the dumplings. Then pour a cup of lemon-lime soda around and between the dumplings without pouring over them.
Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until the sauce is bubbly, the apples are tender, and the dumplings are golden brown. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
Tips for this Apple Dumpling recipe
- My go-to apples for this recipe are crisp tart apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (also known as Cripps Pink).
- We love cinnamon here; however, you should adjust the cinnamon to your taste.
- Feel free to add more spices in small quantities, like 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, ground cloves, nutmeg, or allspice.
- Any lemon-lime soda will work, like Mountain Dew, Sprite, 7up, or ginger ale.
- Don’t pour the soda over the crescent rolls just in and around them.
- When serving, spoon some of the sweet sauce over the delicious dumplings.
- Store covered in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours. After that, store covered in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in a warm oven or in the microwave at reduced power.
What are the best apples for baking?
Fall will be here before you know it, and apple baking will be in full force. My go-to apples for baking are crisp tart apples like Honeycrisp apples or Granny Smith apples. Other good types of apples are Braeburn, Gala, Fuji, Jonagold, or Cripps Pink apples (also known as Pink Lady). Feel free to do a mixture of any or all of these for more texture and flavor. When you cut your apples, slice them at least a quarter inch thick to help keep a little bit of firmness through the baking process.

Can this be reheated easily and still maintain the crisp crust?
Beth Pierce
To be honest with you I have never tried. I don’t think they are going to be as crisp as when they were baked.
Granny
Do you cover the dumplings with foil before baking? Seems like they would get pretty crispy on top baking that long.
Beth Pierce
No I do not but you could keep an eye on them and if you feel like they are browning too much than cover them with aluminum foil.
