What are Brussels Sprouts?
Brussels sprouts are a member of the cabbage family, and they look and taste like little cabbage. This versatile vegetable is usually available year-round, but peak season is from September to February. Brussels sprouts provide plenty of antioxidants and help fight cancer and heart disease. They are so yummy that you will not even believe how healthy they are for you.
How to make Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts
Start by washing, trimming, and slicing your Brussels sprouts in half. Then, cut your onion into half-moon slices. Next, combine the Brussels sprouts, onion, olive oil, maple syrup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Toss to mix and coat with the olive oil and maple syrup.
Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees. Add the Brussels sprouts mixture and air fry for 12-18 minutes or until tender with crispy edges. Check on the sprouts several times to see how they are progressing and to shake the basket. Sprinkle the cooked Brussels sprouts with kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper. For best results, serve promptly.
How to trim and prep Brussels Sprouts
Start by trimming the core end of the sprout and removing any blemished outer leaves. Then, slice the Brussels sprouts in half. Be careful and use a nonskid cutting board. Cutting the Brussels sprouts in half allows for more flavor to seal in them and for them to get crispier edges.
Beth’s Recipe Tips Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts
- Select Brussels sprouts of uniform size to cook at the same rate and time.
- Every air fryer cooks at a different pace, so check on them frequently and shake the basket when you do.
- If you have a small air fryer, work in two batches so as not to crowd it. Keep the first batch in the oven warm while you cook the second batch.
- Honey can be substituted for the maple syrup.
- For a change of taste, drizzle with balsamic glaze, balsamic vinegar, or soy sauce. Or top with freshly grated Parmesan Cheese, crisp bacon crumbles, or red pepper flakes.
Storage and Reheat
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For best results, reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees for about 5 minutes or in the microwave at reduced power.
Freeze cooked and fully cooled Brussels sprouts in a heavy-duty freezer container or bag for up to 3 months. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees for about 5 minutes.
