Are you tired of the same old green bean casserole? This semi-homemade Green Bean Casserole is made with fresh green beans and a made-from-scratch homemade creamy sauce all topped with crispy onions.  Enjoy this flavorful no canned soup recipe for your holiday side dish.

Simmer the green beans first, then plunge them in iced water. Drain and spread them at the bottom of a baking dish.

Fry the bacon, followed by the mushrooms. Cook the garlic next. Remove the mixture and put it in the dish with the green beans. Toss and reserve the bacon grease.

Add butter and let it melt. Whisk in the flour, followed by the salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Alternately whisk in the chicken broth and half and half. Simmer.

Pour over the top of the green bean mixture. Sprinkle with crispy fried onions and bake.
