Combine the milk, cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves together over medium heat. Whisk frequently until the mixture is almost boiling.

Meanwhile, whisk the egg yolks and sugar, adding the sugar 2 tablespoons at a time.

In intervals, add some of the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture and whisk. When most of the milk mixture has been whisked into the egg mixture, add it back to the saucepan.

Cook while whisking. Remove from the heat and whisk in the vanilla. Then, serve.
