Ingredients Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Apples: go with crisp tart apples like Granny Smith apples or Honeycrisp apples. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (Cripps Pink).
- Lemon juice: fresh is best
- Spices: ground cinnamon and nutmeg, but you add a pinch or two of ground cloves or allspice if desired.
- Oats: For best results, use old-fashioned rolled oats for a nutty flavor (without the nuts), more texture, and larger crumbles.
- Butter: unsalted. If using salted butter, omit the added salt
How to make Apple Crumble
See the recipe card below for the complete ingredient list and recipe instructions.
First, toss the apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Stir gently to combine, then spoon the apple mixture into a baking dish.
Now, stir together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Slowly stir in the melted butter with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
Bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown. Cover the mixture with a loose piece of aluminum foil if the mixture browns too fast. Let the dish sit for 15-20 minutes before serving.
Preparation Tips
- Cube the apples into about 1/2-inch cubes, give or take a little bit, or slice into 1/2-inch thick pieces.
- Serve this dish warm, room temperature, or cold. It is a matter of personal preference.
- Add 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for more protein.
Storage and Reheat
Once the dish has completely cooled, store the crumble covered on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 days. You do not have to refrigerate your apple crumble if you consume it within 2 days.
After 2 days, move it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 2 more days for a total of 4 days of consumption time. Reheat in the microwave at 60-70% for 2-3 minutes or until warm.
Frequently Asked Questions
My go-to apples for this recipe are crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (Cripps Pink). Mix all or any of these for more texture and flavor.
Peel and cut your apples into chunks that are 3/4 inch thick to help keep a little firmness through the baking process. For best results, stir them with some lemon juice to keep them from browning while you go through the recipe.
To freeze, first cool to room temperature. Then, cover with 2 layers of plastic wrap followed by a layer of aluminum foil or spoon into a freezer-safe container.
Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat in the oven in the casserole dish covered with aluminum foil at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until warm.
