Bacon wrapped smokies are the perfect easy appetizer for game day and holiday parties. Lil smokie sausages are wrapped in bacon, sprinkled with brown sugar, and baked to perfection. They are quick to prepare, dependable, and easy on the pocketbook.
Consider yourself warned. These are addicting, so proceed with caution. They are the perfect party or game day food. I like to serve them with pizza dip, jalapeno popper cheese ball, and air fryer chicken wings. They are super kid-friendly, so you may want to double the recipe.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Lil Smokies: They are available in several flavors, including beef, chicken and pork, turkey, and Polish smoked sausage. Our favorite is the chicken and pork, but they all taste good in this recipe.
- Bacon: Use good quality smoked bacon that is neither too thick nor too thin.
- BBQ sauce: I like to use a spicy BBQ sauce to offset the sweetness.
- Dijon mustard: You can substitute any prepared mustard.
How to make Bacon Wrapped Smokies
This is the summary version; see the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients and the instructions.
Cut each slice of bacon into thirds, wrap each piece around lil smokie, and secure it with a toothpick.
Sprinkle them with brown sugar and let them sit in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Cook them at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Flip them and cook them for another 5-10 minutes. Mix the barbecue sauce, Dijon mustard, and honey and serve with the smokies.
Preparation Tips
- For ease in cleaning your baking pan, cover it with aluminum foil.
- They do not have to sit in the brown sugar for more than a couple of hours, but the longer they sit in it, the sweeter the bacon gets. Refrigerate them while they are sitting in the brown sugar.
- To add zest and zing, sprinkle them with a bit of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes before baking.
- If planning for a crowd, make a double batch, as they go fast!
Storage and Reheat
Store leftover smokies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on a baking sheet in a single layer at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or in an air fryer at 350 degrees for 4-5 minutes or until warm.
