Make your own Chex Mix
This make-ahead snack is perfect for on-the-go snacking, gamedays, and movie nights at home. Make your own delicious homemade Chex Mix with easy ingredients and simple steps. Your friends and family won’t be able to leave it alone.
I love to serve this tasty homemade snack for he-man football game gatherings. Everyone loves it, and I can put out small individual bowls so everyone is not digging into the same bowl. I like to include it in a spread with lemon pepper wings, ham and cheese sliders, chili cheese dip, and mozzarella sticks.
Ingredients for Chex Mix
How to make Chex Mix
Combine the Rice Chex, Wheat Chex, Corn Chex, cheerios, pretzels, and nuts in a large bowl. Whisk together the melted butter, Worcestershire Sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Cajun seasoning in a large measuring cup or small bowl. Drizzle the buttered mixture over the Chex mixture while stirring. Continue stirring until the mixture is coated.
Spread the mix over two large baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 250 degrees for about 1 hour, turning several times. Remove from the oven and cool before serving or storing.
Recipe Tips
- My mix is made with equal parts rice Chex, wheat Chex, and corn Chex, but you can use any combination of these Chex cereals.
- Toss the Chex Mix while drizzling in the butter to ensure the entire mixture is coated. If need be, enlist a family member or friend for a couple of minutes.
- Be fairly generous with the seasonings. Don’t be afraid to try the Cajun seasoning. It does not add heat. It adds flavor.
- Turn the Chex mix every 15-20 minutes while baking, and rotate the baking sheets to ensure even baking.
- Add bagel crisps, Goldfish, Bugles, oyster crackers, honey-roasted peanuts, or Cheez-Its to the mix.
Can you cook Chex Mix in the Microwave?
Although we prefer to bake the mix, you can cook this in the microwave. Use a large microwave-safe bowl to combine the cereal mix and the butter mixture. Microwave at full power for 6 minutes, stirring well every 2 minutes. Then, transfer the mixture to a large baking sheet and carefully spread it out to cool. Once thoroughly cooled, serve and enjoy.
Storage
Store cooled Chex Mix in a one-gallon storage bag with as much air removed as possible or in an airtight container for about 2 weeks.
