Homemade chocolate covered strawberries are incredibly easy to make and are one of my favorite Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day treats. With just a few helpful hints, anyone can make these easy candies and customize them with sprinkles and nuts.
My family and friends love the taste of these special treats, so save yourself the premium charge and make these beauties right in your kitchen. One bite and you will be hooked. These delights, Chocolate Covered Cherries, Peanut Clusters, and Buckeye Balls are just a few of our favorite candy recipes.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Strawberries: Choose large ripe strawberries free of blemishes that are of uniform size. Please do not remove the leaves of the stem, as it will allow you to hold on to the strawberry when you dunk it in the chocolate.
- Chocolate chips: I like to use Ghirardelli dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips. Melting wafers are also great, especially the Ghirardelli white chocolate melting wafers, which melt better than the chips.
- Coconut oil: or shortening to thin the chocolate just a bit. You don’t need to use it with the melting wafers.
- Toppings: nuts, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles, crushed cookies or graham crackers
How to make Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Start by thoroughly washing and drying the strawberries. Then, chop any nuts or graham crackers very finely. Prep everything so you don’t have to chase things down after the chocolate melts.
I like to melt the chocolate in a mini crockpot, but you could melt the chocolate in a double boiler or the microwave. I melt the white chocolate in the microwave at reduced power. Stir in a little coconut oil to thin the chocolate for easier dipping.
Next, dip your strawberries into the chocolate and lift slowly, letting the excess chocolate drip off. Then, gently place them on parchment-covered baking sheets. If desired, use a small spoon to sprinkle some of the strawberries with chopped nuts, graham cracker crumbs, sprinkles, or crushed cookies.
Refrigerate the strawberries to expedite the setting of the chocolate. Now add a couple of tablespoons of melted chocolate to the corner of a sandwich bag, and using a pair of scissors, cut a tiny corner off the sandwich bag. Then, using very little pressure, drizzle over the set strawberries.
Preparation Tips
- After washing, dry the strawberries thoroughly, including the leaves of the stem, with paper towels so the chocolate sticks and does not seize. Any moisture can cause chocolate to seize.
- If you use nuts or graham cracker crumbs, chop or crush them finely and spoon them over the strawberries before the chocolate sets.
- Melt the milk chocolate or dark chocolate in a mini crock pot. However, heat the white chocolate in the microwave at reduced power as it is slightly more heat-sensitive.
- To drizzle the chocolate, add the melted chocolate to the corner of a plastic sandwich bag and then snip off a very small corner. Drizzle over dipped and set chocolate strawberries.
- If you have any leftover melted chocolate, mix it with cashews, almonds, or peanuts. Spoon the mixture into heaping tablespoons onto parchment paper for quick and easy nut clusters.
Topping ideas
- Finely chopped nuts like pecans, cashews, pistachios, or peanuts
- Mini chocolate chips
- Finely crushed graham cracker crumbs
- Sprinkles like jimmies, nonpareils, and quins.
- Lightly toasted coconut
- Crushed sandwich cookies
Frequently Asked Questions
Enjoy chocolate-covered strawberries the day they are made. I cover mine loosely with paper towels and store them at room temperature for 24 hours. If you can not enjoy them within 24 hours, place them in an airtight container lined with paper towels (to absorb the moisture), store them in the refrigerator, and enjoy them within 2-3 days.
Yes, you sure can, but skip the coconut oil or shortening. You won’t need to thin the chocolate. The white chocolate melting wafers melt better than the white chocolate chips.
