Do you like a good martini? I love martinis, and my hubby adores chocolate, so these are one of our favorites. This delectable martini is a chocolate lover’s dream come true. I had forgotten how much I love these. These will most certainly be on our Easter menu. If you love martinis as much as we do, try my appletini, lemon drop martini, and French martini.
Ingredients Notes and Substitutions
- Grated chocolate: try Ghirardelli Intense Dark
- Chocolate syrup: again, you can’t go wrong with Ghirardelli
- Chocolate liqueur: try Godiva, it is delicious
- Créme de Cacao: DeKuyper’s is my usual go-to. You can substitute Bailey’s Irish Cream for the Creme de Cacao and the heavy cream.
- Vodka: Sky or Titos. Use good quality vodka. It makes a difference. The market has plentiful, great selections.
- Heavy cream: or whipping cream
How to Make a Chocolate Martini
This is just the summary version of the recipe. See the recipe card below for ingredients and complete instructions.
First, grate some chocolate and place it on a plate with some depth. Put a little bit of chocolate syrup on the tip of your finger and run the rim of the glass. Turn the glass upside down and run the edge gently in the grated chocolate. Keep turning and tilting till you get a nice rim of chocolate around the glass.
Put some ice in a martini shaker, and then add the chocolate liquor, creme de cocoa, vodka, and heavy cream. Place the strainer and the cover for the strainer on the shaker and give it a few gentle shakes.
Before you pour the cocktail, swirl a little chocolate sauce into the glass. Promptly remove the top of the strainer and strain the cocktail into the prepared glass. The chilled martini will help prevent the chocolate syrup from spreading too much.
Preparation Tips
- Refrigerate the chocolate syrup before preparing the cocktail. Just a small amount of chocolate syrup at a time on the tip of your finger works best for preparing the glass for rimming. If necessary, put another small amount on the end of your finger and finish working it around.
- Grate the chocolate using a box grater. Do it right on the plate on which you will rim the glasses.
- If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, don’t worry. You can use a clean jar, a sports bottle, or a protein shaker.
Serving Suggestions
These delicious cocktails can be served as dessert or paired with chocolate-covered strawberries, cherry cheesecake, Oreo truffles, or cream cheese brownies.
Why is a Martini Shaken and Not Stirred?
Shaking the martini ingredients with ice for 5 to 10 seconds chills the cocktail perfectly without diluting it too much. If you were to stir the same cocktail with ice, it would quickly dilute before it was consumed, disturbing the perfect balance of ingredients.
