Why Everyone Should Make This
- Everyone loves this layer dip. It is just that good! I don’t think I have ever taken this anywhere that I did not come back with an empty dish. This is one of our favorite game-day appetizers.
- This scrumptious recipe is made in less than 10 minutes and includes a beautiful array of toppings.
- Everything you need for this recipe can be found at your local grocery store. There aren’t any special techniques, so even the novice cook can prepare this treat.
- It is easy enough to modify with more protein from refried beans. Or brown some ground beef, ground turkey, or ground pork. Drain the excess grease, season, and simmer with taco seasoning. Cool and add as a layer to the dip.
Easy Ingredients – Big Taste
- Cream cheese – preferably full fat for flavor and texture
- Sour cream – again full fat
- Taco seasoning – homemade is best
- Lettuce – iceberg works best
- Cheese – cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a Mexican blend
- Other toppings – like black olives, tomatoes, green onions, and jalapeno
How to make Taco Dip
This is just the nutshell version of the recipe. See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and instructions.
Combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning in a medium-sized bowl using a hand mixer. Or stir the mixture with a sturdy wooden spoon. Then, spread the cream cheese mixture in a 9-inch pie plate or an equivalent-sized baking dish.
Now layer with all your taco favorites like shredded lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, sliced black olives, diced tomatoes, and chopped green onions. Then sprinkle with thin slices of jalapeno peppers. Serve with tortilla chips, corn chips, crackers, celery, carrots, or cucumbers. Prepare up to several hours in advance to save yourself even more time.
Preparation Tips and Storage
- Soften the cream cheese to room temperature before making this dip.
- For the best flavor, make my homemade taco seasoning. I promise you will not regret it.
- To add more protein, think refried beans, ground beef, turkey, or pork browned and seasoned with taco seasoning.
- Customize this dip and add your favorite toppings.
- Serve with tortilla chips, pita chips, Fritos, baby bell peppers, carrots, or celery.
- Store this dip in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I do not recommend freezing this dip.

Hi Beth, I tried your recipe. However, my taco dip became runny. Maybe because of the excess water from the lettuce and toimatoes?
