How to Make Ham and Cheese Pinwheels
This is the nutshell version. See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and instructions.
Thaw the puff pastry according to the instructions on the back of the packaging. I take mine out of the fridge about 45 minutes prior to starting the recipe, but there are other ways to thaw it. Once thawed, carefully unfold it. Place it on a cutting board dusted with flour and use a rolling pin to shape it into a rectangle.
Meanwhile, combine the melted butter, honey, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and dried dill. Lightly brush the butter sauce over the portion of the puff pastry facing up. Place single slices of ham over the butter mixture and sprinkle with both kinds of cheese.
Tightly roll the pastry up from the widest end. Wrap the roll in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge. Repeat the procedure with the other puff pastry sheet. Chill the rolls for 30 minutes up to an hour.
Using a sharp knife, cut the rolls into 1/2-3/4 inch thick rounds and place them on a parchment-covered baking sheet with some space between them. Brush the tops and sides with the melted butter mixture and push the seam in. Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Recipe Tips
- Follow the directions on the box for thawing puff pastry. Don’t try to unfold it before it is thawed, or it will crack.
- If you let the dough get too warm, you will need to chill it again. Always work with cold puff pastry dough.
- If the butter mixture starts to solidify before you are ready to proceed with the recipe, pop it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Just make sure it is in a microwave-proof bowl.
- Sometimes, the tails or the seams try to pull away from the pinwheel while baking. It helps to brush a little bit of the honey-butter mixture right under the seam and gently rub it to seal.
Storage and Reheat
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
Puff pastry pinwheels taste best when baked. However, you can reheat them in a 350-degree oven for about 5 minutes. It helps to put an ovenproof cooling rack on a rimmed baking sheet or jelly roll pan and put the pinwheels on top of the rack, as the heat circulates better.
