Party-worthy and delectable Ham and Cheese Sliders recipe made with Hawaiian Sweet Rolls, smoked honey ham, and Swiss Cheese slathered with a Dijon mustard poppy seed butter. These are the perfect finger food for game day, movie night, shindigs, and parties.
The Best Ham and Cheese Sliders
You are going to love how easy these are and how tasty they turn out. With such great savory flavor and ease, these are one of our favorite slider recipes and an easy weeknight dinner. Serve with loaded potato soup, sweet potato salad, creamy coleslaw, or air fryer wedges.
Ingredients for Ham and Cheese Sliders
For this recipe, you will need Hawaiian sweet rolls or slider buns, thin sliced honey ham, Swiss cheese, butter, poppy seeds, honey, dried minced onions, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
How to make Ham and Cheese Sliders
Start by slicing the Hawaiian Rolls in half with a serrated knife. Do not separate the individual rolls. Place the rolls in a casserole dish. Then layer the bottom half with smoked honey ham, then Swiss Cheese, then more smoked ham. Add the top half of the rolls and place them in a baking dish.
Now in a small saucepan over low, melt the butter. Then remove from the heat and whisk in the poppy seeds, honey, minced onions, Dijon Mustard, and Worcestershire Sauce to the melted butter. Pour over the tops of the rolls and, using a pastry brush, spread it over the tops of the sandwiches.
Bake covered for about 15 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from the pan to a cutting board and, using a sharp knife, cut into individual sandwiches along the edges of the rolls.
Beth’s Recipe Tips
- Very thin sliced ham works best for this recipe. I like to use sweet honey-smoked ham, but any ham will work with this recipe.
- To prepare in advance, assemble the sandwiches but reserve the butter honey poppy seed glaze until right before baking. See below for more hints on preparing in advance.
- Skip the stovetop and melt the butter in the microwave in a small bowl. Then add the poppy seeds, honey, minced onion, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire Sauce to the melted butter.
- For a change of pace, substitute Pepper Jack, Provolone, American, or cheddar cheese for the Swiss Cheese.
- Fresh, finely minced onion or onion powder can be substituted for dried minced onion.
- These sandwiches are best served promptly; however, they can be reheated in the oven, toaster oven, or microwave.
How to prepare ham and cheese sliders in advance
Cut the bread and assemble the sandwiches with the sweet ham and Swiss. Then cover them well with plastic wrap. When ready to bake, remove the assembled sandwiches from the refrigerator about 30 minutes prior to baking so that they warm to room temperature.
While the sandwiches are warming, prepare the butter mixture. Remove the sandwiches from the wrap and place them in a casserole dish. Then pour the butter mixture over the sandwiches using a pastry brush to spread it evenly over the top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes or until the buns are lightly browned, and the Swiss is melted.

Love Love Love this recipe. I had a similar one from years ago with hamburger buns and foil; made one change to your recipe based on it, i.e., added a 1/2 tablespoon of horseradish to the sauce… I doubled the recipe for a potluck; had very few left, which I’m saving for lunch… Thx!!!

The pleasure is all mine DeeDee. So glad that everyone liked them! Thanks for the tip on the horseradish.
