Hamburger Steaks with Country Gravy are a quick, inexpensive ground beef recipe prepared in one skillet. Seasoned and cooked ground beef patties are smothered in a simple six-ingredient country brown gravy.
It makes a perfect weeknight comfort food dinner, is a good source of protein, and is super kid-friendly. Serve over rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes with a side of mac and cheese, steamed broccoli, or southern green beans and buttermilk biscuits.
School started this morning, so the race has begun. I was up earlier this morning trying to ensure the kids got to school on time and hubby made it to work on time. Summer vacation is over, and every minute of every day counts more than ever. These lip-smacking good hamburger steak patties are so quick to come together. They are a family favorite dish, and even my picky son loves them. They are delicious and slightly different from Salisbury Steak as they are made without ketchup and beef broth. These hamburger steaks are slathered in rich, creamy country gravy.

What are Hamburger Steaks?
This delectable Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy combines ground beef patties, bread crumbs, and a perfect blend of spices in creamy country gravy. These patties are onion-free, making them super kid-friendly; however, if you like the flavor of onions, please feel free to add them. This recipe comes together in about thirty-five minutes, making it an easy weekday recipe. I like serving it with mashed potatoes, but Amish egg noodles are also delicious. You can also serve it on hamburger buns or with soft rolls on the side.
How do you prepare Hamburger Steaks and Gravy?
These are so easy to prepare. Mix your ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, and spices in a big bowl. Shape the mixture into patties and cook them in a large skillet with a bit of oil over medium-high heat. Once browned, remove them to an oven-proof plate and place them in the oven to finish cooking while you make the gravy.
In the same skillet over low heat, melt enough butter to have four tablespoons of fat. Whisk in the flour and spices. Cook until browned and fragrant, whisking continuously. Stir in the milk and simmer for a few minutes until slightly thickened. Add the patties back to the pan and warm.
It is just that simple and delicious! It is the perfect family meal and a great recipe.
What types of ground beef are best?
Any type of ground beef will work, but I like to cook with either ground chuck or ground sirloin. Both chuck and sirloin work as the patties will not stick to the skillet, and they do not produce an excess amount of fat. Butter works best with the flour when making a roux, so keeping the beef fat to a minimum works best.
Helpful Recipe Tips
- Try adding sauteed mushrooms for a little mushroom gravy or onions for onion gravy.
- Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

PAUL HARRISON
Brilliant recipe! I wanted to make some comfort food using ground beef and saw this recipe.
The method for making the gravy worked out perfectly.
I didn’t use mushrooms but had some sour cream in the fridge that I needed to use. I added it to the gravy and made it decadent!
Thanks so much for the recipe. It was exactly what I was looking for.
Just an edit. I posted on the wrong recipe but the Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy sounds awesome!

How can I incorporate sautéed onions with this?
Kristin
Can I use corn starch instead of flour for the gravy. Gluten free
Beth Pierce
Yes you sure can!!
Leigh
I make mine gluten free by putting gluten free cracker crumbs instead of bread crumbs and I also use all purpose gluten free flour. It is delicious!!
Andy
This look very good. But why do so many recipes call for 1 1/2 lb of meat? I’ve never seen ground beef available in the store at this amount.
Beth Pierce
Sorry! I can always get it at the store and sometimes I buy hamburger at Costco in large packages and I divide it into the sizes that I want.
