Homemade Taco Seasoning is so quick and easy to make with so much flavor compared to those dry taco seasoning packets that have been sitting on the shelves for months. Many of these herbs and spices in this recipe may already be in your pantry or spice cupboard. Double or triple the batch and store it in airtight container for all those delicious taco dishes you love. Use it on chicken, veggies, shrimp, sweet potatoes, soups, and burritos.
How to make classic Taco Seasoning
To make this DIY taco seasoning simply combine the chili powder, cumin, kosher salt, fresh ground black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, red pepper flakes, ground cayenne, and if desired dried minced onion in a small bowl. Whisk or stir to combine well and then store in an airtight container in a cool place in the kitchen.
Recipe tips
- The fresher the spices and herbs are the better the spice blend will be.
- Store in an airtight container like a mason jar, away from the heat of the stove.
- If you don’t like a particular spice simply omit it. That is a huge benefit to mixing your own blends.
- Though it is not traditional try substituting marjoram for the oregano. Marjoram is less pungent, more mild, and sweeter with a woodsy citrus aroma.
- This seasoning blend will last about one year. After that it will begin to lose it’s potency and aroma especially in regard to the dried herbs.
- One standard packet of taco seasoning is equivalent to 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning so adjust your favorite recipes accordingly.
