Pigs in a Blanket are hotdogs wrapped in warm, baked buttery pastry. They are one of the easiest comfort and party foods to make, using a variety of cheese, refrigerated crescent rolls, and everything bagel spice.
Pigs in a blanket are a classic, easy appetizer that everyone loves. Follow these simple steps to create the perfect pigs in a blanket for any occasion. You can whip up a batch of these delicious lunch and snack party dogs in minutes.
They are perfect for Super Bowl Sunday, movie night, kid’s parties, and cocktail parties. I love to serve the mini dogs as appetizers at my parties with hot shrimp dip, easy taco dip, and potato skins. They are so easy that even the kids can help with rolling them.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Crescent roll dough: You can find crescent roll dough in the refrigerator section of your local grocery store. Puff pastry can also be used, but you must cut it into triangles.
- Mini hotdogs: Little smokies are available in several flavors, including beef, chicken and pork, turkey, and Polish smoked sausage. Our favorite is the chicken and pork, but they all taste good in this recipe.
- Sliced cheese: cheddar, Pepper Jack, provolone, American, Monterey Jack or Colby Jack
- Everything bagel seasoning: You can substitute flaky salt, coarsely ground black pepper, or sesame seeds.
How to Make Pigs In a Blanket
This is the summary version; see the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients and the instructions.
Cut a slit in the hotdogs and add the cheese. The slit should be pretty deep but not go through to the bottom.
Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, divide each crescent roll into thirds, making three long, thin triangles. Place one mini dog on the widest part of each triangle and roll up towards the point. Place on prepared baking sheets seam side down.
Beat the egg and water together thoroughly. Lightly brush the mixture over the crescent roll portion of the pigs in a blanket, being careful not to let it puddle around them. Sprinkle with everything bagel spice.
Preparation Tips
- For fun, mix up the cheeses. I used cheddar and Pepper Jack cheese, but you could use provolone, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, sharp cheddar, or American cheese.
- Lil smokies come in packages of different counts, depending on the brand. Some are 42, 40, and 35 counts, so you might have extra crescent dough. If you track your progress, you can cut the last few rolls in half instead of thirds and roll the remaining mini dogs in them.
- These can be prepped up to 2 hours in advance, placed on parchment-covered baking sheets, tightly covered with plastic wrap, and put in the refrigerator.
- These treats are best enjoyed promptly.
