Sauteed Asparagus with seven easy ingredients is the perfect vegetable side dish for baked fish, grilled chicken, or roasted pork. It takes less than ten minutes to prepare, and it is a hit every time. Enjoy the best that summer offers with fresh pan-sauteed asparagus. It will quickly become one of your favorite veggies. It is so yummy with steak, grilled chicken, salmon, and seafood.
How to make Sauteed Asparagus
First, trim the woody stems and cut the asparagus into 1-2 inch segments. Then heat the oil and melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the asparagus and cook for 3-5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Then reduce the heat and add the garlic, cooking for 1 minute while stirring. Season with salt and pepper to taste and sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese.
Helpful Recipe Tips
- Look for good quality fresh asparagus stalks that have a nice dark green color, look plump and not shriveled, and have clean, crisp (not soft or slimy) tips.
- Trim the tough ends off the bottom of the asparagus. I usually trim about 1 1/2 inches off the base of each stalk.
- Use freshly grated Parmesan Cheese for the best flavor.
- Other seasonings and fresh herbs to work with include red pepper flakes, basil, parsley, dill, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, and balsamic vinegar.
- For a change of pace, try pine nuts, chopped almonds, lemon zest, or feta cheese.
- Plan on serving this dish fairly promptly, as it is best served warm while it is just a teeny bit crisp. If desired, serve with a fresh lemon wedge for a spritz of fresh lemon juice.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave at reduced power.
How to properly store asparagus
Asparagus is a lot like celery in that it needs moisture to stay crisp. Asparagus should be stored stem side down in a little less than an inch of cool water to keep it from drying out. Cover it loosely with a plastic bag. Tall thin measuring cups are great for this. The water should be changed daily, and the asparagus is good for up to about a week in the refrigerator.
