Spaghetti pie is a tasty and fun twist on a classic dish with tons of flavor and simple ingredients. Anyone can create this comforting and satisfying meal in a few easy steps. Serve it with French baguettes and sweet cream butter or an Italian salad with homemade Italian dressing.
Let’s Spill the Tea
- Cuisine style: Italian American
- Taste: cheesy, herby, and tangy from marinara
- Effort and skill: easy to moderate
- Pros: delicious and super fun
- Cons: a few extra dishes, but well worth it
Easy Ingredients For Great Spaghetti Pie
This spaghetti pie is super simple, with everyday ingredients and easy substitutions.
- Pasta: the obvious choice is spaghetti, but thin spaghetti, angel hair, linguine, and fettuccine work well.
- Butter: salted or unsalted
- Eggs: large ones
- Parmesan Cheese: freshly grated. A good substitute is Pecorino Romano Cheese.
- Italian sausage: ground beef works well too
- Marinara: or your favorite pasta sauce
- Ricotta: whole milk is best. You can use cottage cheese, but I much prefer ricotta.
- Mozzarella: low moisture is best for melting
- Seasoning: garlic powder, dried Italian seasoning, and fresh herbs such as basil, parsley, or thyme for garnish.
How To Make Spaghetti Pie
This is just the nutshell version of the recipe. See the recipe card below for ingredients and complete directions.
Cook the pasta al dente according to package directions and drain well. Add the butter and let it melt in the warm pasta. Add the eggs and Parmesan cheese and mix to coat.
Meanwhile, cook the Italian sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain any excess grease, add the marinara, and simmer. In a medium bowl, stir the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder.
To assemble, press the spaghetti mixture into a greased, deep-dish pie plate. Spoon the ricotta mixture on top of the spaghetti and spread it with an offset spatula. Spoon the sauce over the ricotta mixture and top with the remaining shredded mozzarella. Bake for about 20 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
What To Serve With Spaghetti Pie
- Balance it with something healthy like Olive Garden copycat salad, roasted asparagus, or tomato cucumber salad.
- Add something crusty to soak up all that sauce and complement the Italian meal, such as no knead bread, garlic cheese bread, or cheddar drop biscuits.
- Serve something cool and refreshing, like peach daiquiris or cherry lemonade.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can prepare this up to one day in advance. Follow all the steps, but do not bake it. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge. Remove it from the fridge 30-40 minutes before baking to bring to room temperature. Bake as instructed.
Use long pasta such as thin spaghetti, angel hair, linguine, and fettuccine. They all work well.
You can use an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish and cut your pizza pie into squares.

I made this recipe over the weekend…loved it the first night for dinner, even better the next day as leftovers. I used hot Italian sausage since that’s what I had on hand. Would there be any reason why this couldn’t be frozen? Maybe add the mozzarella when it’s reheated? Has anyone tried? Thank you.

My pleasure, Elayne.
