Stir Fried Bok Choy is an easy healthy side dish that is prepared in about ten minutes. Even my picky son loves this dish. Adjust the spice to your liking and feel good about feeding your family wholesome natural ingredients.
What is bok choy?
Bok choy is a type of Chinese cabbage. You might find it at the market under different names like Chinese white cabbage, pak choi or pok choi. It is green and leafy at the top and looks a little like romaine. It has a round white bulb on the bottom and slightly resembles celery or rhubbard. This delicious heart healthy vegetable is grown in China, Canada and parts of California. Most of my local grocery stores carry it.
Is bok choy healthy?
The new year is here and it is time to clean up the diet. Bok choy is low in calories, rich in vitamins A, C and K and power packed with calcium, iron and magnesium. One cup of bok choy has nine calories with just a tiny trace of polyunsaturated fat. It is a good source of fiber, easy to prepare, and tastes delicious! It can be steamed , sauteed or stir fried.
How do you prepare bok choy for cooking?
Both the green and white parts of the bok choy are used in cooking. Prepare the bok choy for cooking by slicing off the bottom couple of inches where the bulb comes together. Then simple chop it cutting the green parts in over one inch bites and the white parts a little closer to one half inch. Place the cut pieces in a colander and rinse well with cold water. Shake out the excess water and use a paper towel to move through it to soak up any additional moisture. Now it is ready for stir fry!
How do make Stir Fried Bok Choy?
First toast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat until light browned. It usually takes about three minutes. Be sure to toss them or stir them to keep them from burning. Remove the sesame seeds and place in a small bowl.
Next simply heat a little canola oil in the same skillet over medium high heat. This delectable recipe can also be prepared in a wok. Add the ginger, onion and bok choy. Cook for two to three minutes stirring frequently. Add the garlic, red pepper and soy sauce and cook for additional one minute. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and serve immediately.
What do you serve with Stir Fried Bok Choy?
Grilled steak, grilled chicken, poached or grilled fish or Beef Bulgogi (Korean Beef) are all excellent choices. You can also use the same skillet and stir fry some beef or chicken before cooking the bok choy. Just plate it once cooked and add it back to the skillet to warm right before the the bok choy is done.

I love the sesame seeds. Toasting them really brings out a delightful flavor. Such a super easy dish. I’ve been a fan of bok choy in Oriental cooking for years, and I’ve cooked with it before — including it in my other stir frys, but this is the first time I’ve really ever seen bok choy as the star of the show! Wonderful. 🙂
