Homemade Chocolate Covered Strawberries are incredibly easy to make and one of my favorite Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day treats. With just a few helpful hints, anyone can make these easy candies and customize them with sprinkles and nuts.
Chocolate Covered Strawberries
My family and friends love the taste of these special treats, so save yourself the premium charge and make these beauties right in your own kitchen. One bite, and you will be hooked. These delights, Chocolate Covered Cherries, Peanut Clusters, and Buckeye Balls are just a few of our favorite candy recipes.
How to make Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Start by washing and drying the strawberries very thoroughly. Then chop any nuts or graham crackers very finely. Have everything prepped and ready to go, so you are not chasing things down after the chocolate is melted. I like to melt the chocolate in a mini crockpot, but you could melt the chocolate in a double boiler, or in the microwave. I melt the white chocolate in the microwave at reduced power. Stir in a little coconut oil to thin the chocolate for easier dipping.
Next, dip your strawberries into the chocolate and lift slowly, letting the excess chocolate drip off. Then gently place them on parchment-covered baking sheets. If desired, use a small spoon to sprinkle some of the strawberries with chopped nuts, graham cracker crumbs, sprinkles, or crushed cookies. Refrigerate the strawberries to expedite the setting of the chocolate. Now add a couple of tablespoons of melted chocolate to the corner of a sandwich bag, and using a pair of scissors cut a tiny corner off the sandwich bag. Then, using very little pressure, drizzle over the set strawberries.
Recipe Tips
- Choose large ripe strawberries free of blemishes that are of uniform size.
- Do not remove the leaves of the stem, as it will allow you to hold on to the strawberry when you dunk it in the chocolate.
- After washing, dry the strawberries very thoroughly, including the leaves of the stem, with paper towels so the chocolate sticks and does not seize. Any moisture can cause chocolate to seize.
- If using nuts or graham cracker crumbs, chop or crush very finely and spoon over the strawberries before the chocolate sets.
- Melt the milk chocolate or dark chocolate in a mini crock pot. However, heat the white chocolate in the microwave at reduced power as it is slightly more sensitive to heat.
- Have everything you need within arm’s reach as chocolate can start to set quickly.
- To drizzle, simply add melted chocolate to the corner of a plastic sandwich bag and then snip off a very small corner. Drizzle over dipped and set chocolate strawberries.
- If you have any leftover melted chocolate, grab some cashews, almonds, or peanuts and mix them in the melted chocolate. Spoon by heaping tablespoons full onto parchment paper for quick and easy nut clusters.
Stay Organized
Chocolate Covered Strawberries are not difficult at all, but they do work out best with good organizational skills. Thoroughly read the post and all the directions prior to starting the recipe. Have everything you need within arms reach. Decide how many chocolate-covered strawberries you want and how many white chocolate strawberries you want. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips in a mini crockpot on low. It takes about 1 hour to melt the chocolate. Do not put the top on the crockpot. Then, dip how many strawberries you want in the melted chocolate and place them on a parchment-covered baking sheet. Now, add any nuts, graham cracker crumbs, or sprinkles you like to those strawberries but don’t forget to save some for drizzling white chocolate. Then refrigerate those strawberries until set.
Once set, melt the white chocolate in the microwave, following the package instructions carefully. Then dip the remaining strawberries in the white chocolate and place them on parchment-covered baking sheets. Next, add any nuts, graham cracker crumbs, or sprinkles. Then refrigerate those strawberries until set.
Spoon a little white melted chocolate in a zipper sandwich bag and snip off a tiny corner. Remove the semisweet chocolate-covered berries from the fridge and drizzle the white chocolate over them. Once the white chocolate strawberries are set, spoon a little semisweet chocolate into a zipper bag and drizzle over them.
How to store Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Chocolate-covered strawberries are best enjoyed the day that they are made. I cover mine loosely with paper towels and store them at room temperature for 24 hours. If it is not possible to enjoy them within 24 hours, place them in an airtight container lined with paper towels (to absorb the moisture), store them in the refrigerator, and enjoy them within 2-3 days.
Topping ideas
- Finely chopped nuts like pecans, cashews, pistachios, or peanuts
- Mini chocolate chips
- Finely crushed graham cracker crumbs
- Sprinkles like jimmies, nonpareils, and quins.
- Lightly toasted coconut
- Crushed sandwich cookies
